The Greatest Game of All
Kevin Gallagher © 2000
There was
something in the air
Like Sundays at the County fair
The Park had not a seat to spare
When he heard the call
Just 8 years old and 4 feet tall
With Williams picture on his wall
Carl Yazstremski on his ball
and John Kennedy down the hall
Refrain
The first time
that he'd ever seen
The Fenway field of green
His father led him down the aisle
They sat behind the screen
The sixth game of the Series
With their backs against the wall
There in wooden chairs
To see the greatest game of all
Sparky and the
Red Machine
Were there to catch their series
dream
Tony and Joe and Johnny
All were headed to the Hall
Yaz was in his glory days
When Eastwick threw one down the
plate
Carbo set the crowd ablaze
When it left that centerfield wall
Refrain
Everywhere in
Boston
You could feel that grateful sigh
They were in it till the end
The game was at a tie
It happens every year
When the summer turns to fall
They had a box seat pair
To see the greatest game of all
Bridge
The greatest game of all
Is in your heart and in your soul
Like your favorite fishin hole
And that old time "Rock and Roll"..............
(Musical Interlude)
Now the hour is
getting late
And Carlton comes to center stage
Calmly he approached the plate
His old familiar home
When that ball flew through the
air
That child said a silent prayer
He watched as Carlton waved it
fair
As it headed for the pole
Refrain
The first time
that he'd ever seen
The Fenway field of green
Upon his fathers shoulders
He can still recall the scene
That old flag was standing still
When Pudge took his curtain call
There in wooden chairs
They saw the greatest game of all
Tony, Pudge and Sparky played
The greatest game of all,
Baseball!
